For a 40 hour per week job, the total hours per year is 2,080.
For a 37.5 hour per week job (the usual calculation for 12-hour shifts, 3 per week), the total hours per year is 1,950.
Many health care jobs must be filled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, complicating the need for staffing. For jobs that are covered by 8-hour shifts, 7 days a week, each position requires more than one person, so 8 x 7 = 56. 56 hours /40 hours per week = 1.4 FTEs.
So for each 8 hour shift staffed 7 days per week requires 1.4 FTEs.
