The following is found in textbook Chapter 8;8-5d Internet Companies' Privacy Policies -Ethical Issue

What are the privacy implications of the facial recognition industry?Using biometricsthe measurement and analysis of an individual's unique physical characteristicsfacial recognition software can identify someone from a photo or video. The program is then able to compare this information with biometric details stored in a database to make a match. This technology has potential benefits, particularly in the arenas of national security and artificial intelligence. It also has one significant potential drawback: the loss of privacy. The idea of closed-circuit cameras scanning city streets or artificial intelligence applications scouring social media to pick out faces fills many with dread. "The right to participate in society anonymously is something we cannot lose," says one privacy advocate.

Nationwide, more than sixty university administrations have promised not to link facial recognition technology with their campus security cameras. Promoters of the Coachella Arts and Music Festival, an annual California event, and other large-scale events have made similar vows.

Several states already have comparable protections in place. Legislation passed many years ago in Illinois, for example, requires companies to obtain written permission before collecting a person's facial scan, fingerprints, or other biometrics.Facebook ran afoul of this law with its Tag Suggestions photo-labeling service, which uses facial recognition software to connect faces with names on its social media platforms. The company paid $550 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by Illinois residents who claimed that Tag Suggestions violated their right to privacy.
