In the mountains of Aibonito, a landslide has trapped several community volunteers who were helping in the restoration of the area. You and some General Physics classmates go to the scene to see how you can help. The trapped rescuers have been able to reach a point, from the cave they fell into, at the bottom of a high vertical shaft to the surface, which allows them access to fresh air, but they are in desperate need of fresh water and bandages for injuries. Some rescuers ask you to help pack a lightweight plastic cylindrical container with water bottles and bandages. Simply dropping the container down the shaft risks damaging the container and contents and injuring the miners. Tying a rope to the container and lowering it on the end of the rope is time consuming. A quick and relatively safe method is to wrap a light rope around the vessel. One end of the rope will be secured and the vessel will be released on the vertical axis. The vessel should unwind from the rope like a falling yo-yo. (a) If immediate access to light dressings is needed due to injury, in order to get the vessel to the bottom of the shaft in the shortest possible time interval, should you pack the heavy water bottles in the center of the vessel or near the outer edges? (b) If the medical need is not so urgent and, for safety considerations, you want the vessel to reach the bottom of the shaft with the lowest possible velocity, should you pack the water bottles in the center of the vessel or near the outer edges?
