Writing Assignment: Work Plan Development Purpose The purpose of the local infrastructure is create a local development environment to support data cleansing and transformation, initial data storage, partial algorithm testing, and initial application development. The local infrastructure complements the cloud infrastructure. It provides fine-grained control over data ingestion and organization. It affords an opportunity to evaluate algorithms on native systems - a feature which is not available in the cloud. It also enables compartmentalized testing for algorithms and software. The isolated testing environment provides a firewall between newly- developed code and mature software which has progressed to the later stages of design and implementation. Initial Organization The local infrastructure will initially be organized into three workspaces for data ingestion, data storage, and data processing (see figure 1). Raw data will be ingested into the transformation server. The transformation server will perform various restructuring processes in order to restructure, evaluate, and process data as necessary. Cleansed data will be directed to a relational database. A number of OLAP operations will be performed in the relational database order to create data cubes. These cubes will be relocated to a data warehouse on a separate server. Alternatively, the relational database and the data warehouse could occupy the same server, freeing the additional data store to house a document NoSQL database such as Elastic Search or MongoDB. Data Ingestion Data Storage Data Processing Relational DB Raw Data Transformation Server App Server Data Warehouse Figure 1. Initial Workflow Writing Assignment: Work Plan Development Initial Architecture The initial architecture will be consist of six servers and a number of workstations (see Figure 2).One server will provide access control, authentication, and directory services. it will use Microsoft Active Directory or a comparable platform. It will also function as a license server for select applications installed on the workstations. One server will host a relational database such as PostgreSQL or equivalent. Another server will support a data warehouse. A separate server will perform data transformation. A fourth server will provide computational resources and host data visualization and analytics applications such as Tableau and Kibana. The servers will be collocated on the same switch within a single VLAN. The workstations will also be connected to the same VLAN from over the campus network. The final server will be provisioned to support network-attached file storage and provide facilities to back up the data. The software specifications for each server are outlined in Table 1 (below). You are tasked with implementing the above described system for a medium-sized pharmaceutical company. The system will be used to support a big data ecosystem. The big data engine will support the company's research and development division. You assignment is to develop a plan for purchasing the necessary hardware and implementing the system. You need to determine technical specifications for the servers based on the associated software. Next, development a budget. Finally, create a two paged (1.5 spaced) explanation of the acquisition and implementation plan for management.
