Assuming you have been sent to a drinking water treatment plant in the USA for an internship or work placement and you were informed that the flow of raw water to the coagulation system is 1.0 m3/s. You are then presented with the datasheet of a polymer to be used as coagulant and the concentration of the polymer is to be 0.40 mg/L on an as sold basis. The polymer datasheet states that it is approved for clarification of potable water at dosages <=1.0 mg/L and the polymer density (as supplied) is 1.064 kg polymer emulsion per litre emulsion (i.e.,1.064 kg/L). Determine:
(a) The rate of feed flow of neat (i.e., undiluted) polymer solution (3 marks).
(b) The amount of polymer in barrels required for 6 months of storage if the volume of the barrel to be used for polymer storage is 208.2 L (3 marks).
Note: The as sold basis means as it comes out of the container. For example, a 10 mg/L solution means that 10 mg of product from the container is associated with 1000 mL of raw water, that is,10 mg product per litre of raw water.
