ASSURANCE OF LEARNING EXERCISE: STRATEGIES FOR A HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS OVERVIEW A mission statement, vision statement, strategy statement, and direction statement are foundational elements for the success of an organization. As a formal written document intended to capture an organization's unique and enduring purpose, practices, and core values, the mission statement is considered to be critical to organizational success of and is the starting point of every strategic management initiative. For this assignment you will develop a values statement for your selected healthcare organization. Values illustrate the core of what we, as individuals or communities, hold to be intrinsically important and desirable. These values guide the choices and preferences for specific outcomes. Organizational values describe what is important to the function and success of an organization. Goals, often formulated in a mission statement, further state or clarify those values. Organizational values are relevant to decision making. After reading chapters 68 of the Moseley text, you will select one of the following healthcare organizations in Middleboro to focus on for the remainder of the course: Case 5: Webster Health System Case 6: Midcare, Inc. INSTRUCTIONS Each student will write a minimum of a 10-page report, in current APA format, (excluding title page, references, etc.). Your report must be supplemented with research from your textbook, the cases from the course text, peer-reviewed references, and other quality sources to determine answers and/or solutions. Note: A minimum of 10 scholarly (peer-reviewed) references must be used that support your responses in the paper in addition to the textbook. Use of scholarly sources is an expected attribute of academic university course work. Being able to distinguish between journals (scholarly sources) and magazines (non-scholarly sources) is important since content in a journal is considered more authoritative than a magazine. The authority and credibility evident in scholarly sources will contribute a great deal to the overall quality of your papers. The major advantage of citing peer-reviewed articles is that they provide a trusted form of knowledge; this trust is particularly important in your assignments when you need to support your statements with literature. Using scholarly sources also means that you are using sources that are aimed at your readership level as a university student. What is a scholarly source? Scholarly sources (also referred to as academic, peer-reviewed, or refereed sources) are written by experts in a particular field. These resources will provide the most substantial information for your assignment papers. When a source has been peer-reviewed, it has undergone the review and scrutiny of a review board of colleagues in the authors field. Sources for Scholarly Resources. Look for publications from a professional organization. Use databases such as JSTOR that contain only scholarly sources. Additionally, use databases such as Academic Search Complete or other EBSCO databases that allow you to choose "peer-reviewed journals". Use university libraries and apply peer reviewed as a search criterion. Examples of scholarly journals include BMC Health Services Research; International Journal for Quality in Health Care; New England Journal of Medicine; PLoS ONE; and Health Services Research.
BUSI 494 Page 2 of 4 Next, complete the following: A. Define the organizational direction for your selected healthcare organization. B. Include a mission statement, vision statement, strategy statement, and direction statement for your selected organization. a. Define and discuss the Biblical worldviews of compassion and stewardship. i. Consider how the core values of the organizations mission, vision, and/or strategy statements reflect the worldviews of compassion and stewardship? C. Based on information provided in the Middleboro cases, as well as your definition of an organizational direction, develop a values statement for your selected healthcare organization. a. As a healthcare leader/manager consider how you might incorporate the worldviews of compassion and stewardship in the Values Statement for your selected healthcare organization. D. Using the strategy formulation process, define critical issues faced by your healthcare organization. Use peer reviewed literature to support the critical issues you identified. a. In this case study, an example of a critical issue faced by the healthcare organization might be the lack of behavioral health services offered at Webster Health System. You might support your discussion of this issue with peer reviewed literature such as the following example: i. The presence of adequate behavioral health services is a critical healthcare need for communities. Shalev et al. (2020) mentioned that individuals living with serious medical illnesses who suffer with behavioral health issues often have two or more diseases or medical conditions at the same time. The current healthcare labor force is poorly prepared to address the difficult needs of these individuals (Shalev et al., 2020). Webster Health System lacks behavioral health services and according to Biel et al. (2019) U.S. states are increasingly concerned with tackling behavioral health access since Medicaid is one of its biggest funders. Because there is a national shortage of behavioral health providers, Biel et al. (2019) proposed that primary care providers might provide an important function in identifying and treating behavioral health conditions and generating referrals to mental health providers. Thus, Webster Health might consider incorporating behavioral health services into their primary care settings. ii. You would cite the peer reviewed sources in the above paragraph as: Beil, H., Feinberg, R. K., Patel, S. V., & Romaire, M. A. (2019). Behavioral health integration with primary care: Implementation experience and impacts from the State innovation model round 1 States. Select 12 key issues and devote sections of your 10-page report to further discuss the issues in greater detail. After reading Chapters 910 of the Moseley text, you will formulate a strategy and related strategic plan of how your selected healthcare organization will target this key issue. Then, complete the following: F. Identify key stakeholders within your healthcare organization for implementing the strategic plan and their role(s) in the strategic planning process. Are the roles interrelated? If so, how? G. Identify specific examples of community/population health benefits likely to result from successful strategic planning by the local healthcare organization(s). a. Further discuss how the Biblical worldviews of compassion and stewardship might impact the cost, access, and quality of healthcare in the local healthcare organization. i. Biblical compassion speaks to what Christians should do to better make sure people are well taken care of. Traditionally, Christians have been very involved with health care. Jesus reminded His followers to take care of those who cannot care for themselves (Matthew 25:40). As a healthcare leader/manager how might you demonstrate the Biblical worldview of compassion regarding the cost, access to care, and quality of care in your local healthcare organization? In compassion, Christians should be involved in helping provide high quality, low cost care to those in need. The moral compass of a follower of Christ should always be in accord with the right understanding and belief of our duty to display a merciful and compassionate love for our neighbor as we endeavor in unity to achieve the common good for all in our community. 1. For example, as a healthcare leader consider how you might exhibit compassion in the sense of human dignity, shared goals, the common good (access to quality healthcare by all is strongly linked to the common good), or the provision of charity care (Matthew 25:3540). ii. The second issue is stewardship which involves the appropriate use of the money and possessions God entrusts us with. As a healthcare leader/manager how might you promote lower healthcare costs, improve access to care, and improve quality of care in the local healthcare organization? 1. As an example, consider how you as a healthcare leader/manager might promote Christ-centered healthcare to meet the need of quality and accessible health care for the local community through the use of volunteer workers.
BUSI 494 Page 4 of 4 2. Historically healthcare functions more effectively when controlled at the local level and only aided by higher level governments and companies. As a healthcare leader/manager how might you influence the federal government (Congress) to focus on laws that promote a local level system where individuals have motivation to keep their costs low because they are paying, and keep the quality high because they are using what they are buying? H. Appendices of the report must include a detailed financial analysis (i.e., Balanced Scorecard, Profit/Loss Statement, Capital Expenditures, and/or Revenue/Expense Report). This will be submitted with your 10-page report. I. Develop an action plan progress review for at least one aspect of the strategic plan for your organization. The action plan you developed to review your business strategy should list the metrics you will track and be supported by peer reviewed literature. For example: a. One aspect of the strategic plan for my organization to be reviewed is determining if the addition of behavioral health services improved access to care. To determine this, I will conduct a SWOT review. According to Iraci (2021) an organization must understand its current situation. This involves collecting data for analysis and completing a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. A SWOT assessment is a strategic planning tool that helps an organization identify opportunities by exploring the internal and external operating environment, the competition, risks, and barriers (Iraci, 2021). i. The APA reference for this peer reviewed citation is: Iraci, J. A. (2021). The strategic planning process and strategic plan. The RMA Journal, 104(3), 52-60. J. Create a detailed annual strategic planning process for your healthcare organization. K. Develop and define a practical balanced scorecard for your healthcare organization. This is a good place to use a peer reviewed source that explains the benefits of a Balanced Scorecard such as the following article: Amer, F., Hammoud, S., Khatatbeh, H., Lohner, S., Boncz, I., & Endrei, D. (2022). The deployment of balanced scorecard in health care organizations: Is it beneficial? A systematic review. BMC Health Services Research, 22(1), 65-65. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12913-021-07452-7 Your analytical framework must be sufficiently comprehensive and robust to assess the organization from marketing, financial, human resources, community health, operational, and strategic perspectives. Remember, critical findings and recommendations must be written as if they were being presented to the organizations CEO and Board of Directors using an appropriate framework and style. Organize your report to facilitate its understanding. You will be using this assignments information in the future to create a presentation for the Board of Directors. A minimum of 10 scholarly (peer reviewed) references must be used that support your responses in the report in addition to the textbook. This is a formal report, so your answer(s) must not be numbered, but you must use titles and subheadings to guide the reader through the narrative.
