Attachment is a necessary relationship between an infant and the primary caregiver for normal social and emotional development. The role of attachment is to provide a secure base from which to explore and to be a haven that also provides comfort. How exactly is this attachment formed? This attachment is formed based on the caregiver's response to the child being in distress, which can be anything from falling ill or if they're emotionally upset (Benoit, 2004). At around six months old, a child can recognize a caregiver's response to their distress and can respond to adjust their behaviors accordingly. There are four types of attachments: secure, avoidant, resistant, and disorganized. Secure attachment is where the infant has come to trust and depend on their caregivers. Secure attachment is a result of a compassionate response. For instance, if a child is in anguish and the caregiver's response is to pick them up and tell them everything will be okay, you will get a secure attachment. Avoidant attachment is if the caregiver were to leave and come back, the infant would turn away from them rather than embrace them(Kail & Cavanaugh, 2023, pg.602).This type of response occurs when a caregiver ignores the child's distress call or even becomes annoyed (Benoit, 2004). After being separated, if a child wants to be held but is difficult to comfort, this would be a resistant attachment(Kail & Cavanaugh, 2023, pg.608). Resistant attachment is caused by inconsistent parenting, one minute they're loving and the next they're insensitively ignorant (Benoit,2004). Lastly is disorganized attachment. Disorganized attachment which is also known as fearful-avoidant, is where the child may have problems controlling their negative emotions. It is said that this attachment may be a result of childhood trauma, neglect, or even abuse (Robinson,2024). Attachment affects emotional development by dictating how that child responds to life problems. For example, if there is a secure attachment that would entail that you learned to trust others and it's safe to assume that you would be more empathetic. On the other hand, with a disorganized attachment, you would be insecure and feel that you are not deserving of love. I can see the consequences of attachment in my personal life. I would say that I have a secure attachment as I trust easily and find it easy to empathize with others.
