Resistance of a wire: Pcu = 1.7 x 10-8 0 . m L R = PA PAL = 2. 7 X 10-8 0 . m p - resistivity, in Q . m L - length, in m A - cross-sectional area, in m2 A = mr2 Procedure Go to: http://www.thephysicsaviary.com/Physics/Programs/Labs/ResistanceOfWireLab/index.html Part 1: Resistance vs. Length 1. Click on the begin button to start the lab. 2. Make sure that your wire type is set to Nichrome and then measure the radius of the wire by using the wire cross-section in the bottom left of the program display. You will not be changing either of these factors in part one of this lab. Record the wire type and the radius in the Data Sheet. 3. Record the resistance of the wire for 10 unique lengths. Use Excel or Google Sheets to plot R vs L. Label your axes and provide a meaningful title for your graph. Take a screenshot of the graph and include in your lab report. 5. In a sentence or so, give the relationship between the length of a wire and its resistance. Keep your wire set as Nichrome and make sure that your wire is at least 2 meters long. Write down the exact length of the wire you will be using and make sure you don't change this parameter through the course of Part 2. Record the wire type and the length on the Data Sheet. 2. Record the resistance of the wire for 10 unique radii. You will get the cross-sectional area using the formula for the area of a circle. 3. Use Excel or Google Sheets to plot R vs A. Label your axes and provide a meaningful title for your graph. Take a screenshot of the graph and include in your lab report. 4. In a sentence or so, give the relationship between the cross-sectional area of a wire and its resistance. Part 3: Wire Type 1. For this part of the lab you will be switching your wire between copper and aluminum. You will not be changing the thickness of the wire. Make sure you write down the radius of the wire you will be using for this part of the lab. 2. Randomly generate a certain length of wire and then switch from copper to aluminum and write down both resistances. Don't change your length until you have taken both readings. 3. Collect data for 10 unique lengths. 4. Use Excel or Google Sheets to plot R vs L for copper and aluminum. Label your axes and provide a meaningful title for your graph. 5. Add a trendline (use linear fit) for both copper and aluminum and display the equations of line on your graph. Take a screenshot of the graph and include in the lab report. 6. What does the slope represent? 7. Use the slope to find the resistivity p of copper and aluminum. Show your work, 8. Calculate the percent error for the resistivities you found.
