AV only keeps track of product type instead of specific product. The terms inventory/inventory type and product/product type are the same and used interchangeably. HWC has three warehouses which are identified by their names. The same inventory type may be stored in more than one warehouse and a warehouse typically has many different inventory types. There are always some items in a warehouse. The same product type may be stored in different warehouses at the same time. HWC needs to track the quantity on hand of different inventory types in different warehouses. HWC prefers certain vendors for different inventory types. For instance, HWC likes to buy Japanese sake from Nihonshi Wine Trading Company. However, HWC sometimes may purchase the same inventory type from Osaka Liquor Limited. HWC adds an inventory type to the database whenever it has identified a preferred and at least one back-up vendor for the inventory type. That is, an inventory type has at least one preferred vendor and one or more backup vendors. A vendor can be the preferred (or backup) vendor for more than one inventory type. HWC needs to keep track of the preferred and back-up vendor information. HWC has a group of purchasing clerks who order products from various vendors. All purchases must be preceded by an order; purchase clerks are never allowed to just go out and buy something without going through the formal ordering process. Steven Han is the only purchasing manager in HWC. Because he approves all purchase orders, his participation is not tracked in the database. Only one purchase clerk is responsible for any one order. Its vendors accept nearly all of HWC's orders. It usually takes 2 to 3 weeks for a vendor to ship the ordered goods to HWC. Multiple orders accepted by the same vendor are sometimes combined into a single shipment to HWC. On the other hand, some vendors may send one order in multiple shipments. One of HWC's receiving clerks receives the products, unpacks and counts them, enters the appropriate information into the information system. HWC usually pays for all purchases made from a vendor during a given month on the last day of that month with one check. However, HWC does make partial payments for purchases of inventory occasionally. Each and every check (including checks written for other things such as loan payments, wages, etc.) is written by one of HWC's accounts payable clerks and is drawn on one of its cash accounts. About 30% of cash disbursements are related to purchases of inventory. HWC enters information about its employees, cash accounts, customers, and vendors before entering information about any events for which those things need to be tracked.
