All month we have been looking at emotions, motivations, attitudes, and Chapter 11 looks at conflict. OD functions include looking at systems to prevent or resolve conflicts. Further, often HR and managers must confront situations that have potential conflict.
The below exercise is for students to determine the best course of action for the following scenario based upon theories in Chapter 11 of Helm-Stevens and Kipley AND additional research to develop an action plan to resolve this situation. What type of conflict is occurring? What potential conflict might occur? Don't forget to give examples.
Cee-Jay works very hard as a picker at the local transfer warehouse and feels his co-workers are not carrying their weight. In fact, he has processed 20 to 23 orders each hour whereas the team average is 18-20 orders. His complaining has "blown" over to his co-workers and they are upset about his negativity. Cee-Jay also decides to talk about these problems with a robotics technician who services machinery. After a few weeks, tensions, and conflicts among the employees at the local warehouse are affecting productivity and even the one technician from the vendor won't come into the warehouse when Cee-Jay is working. A co-worker in "confidence" reports this to you, the store manager.
