Background: The World Trade Organization was established to promote free trade throughout the world and thereby increase prosperity. However, the WTO has been bogged down for the past 20 years without achieving any major breakthroughs during this interval. One of the obvious problems with the WTO is the requirement for consensus amongst all member nations. Due to the ineffectiveness of the WTO, many of the world's largest economies have focused their trade priorities on securing regional trade agreements with specific trading partners. This movement towards regional trade agreements has worked well for countries such as Canada, but risks further prejudicing developing nations who are locked out of the regional trade organizations. It also risks making the WTO increasingly irrelevant in the reality of global international trade in the future.
The Question: BE IT RESOLVED that, in order to support prosperity and equality of opportunity for developing nations, the world's developed nations should pivot away from their current focus on increasing prosperity through negotiation of regional trade agreements, and focus all their future energies on reforming the World Trade Organization and implementing their future trade policy primarily through World Trade Organization mechanisms such that every developing country throughout the world has equal access to free trade opportunities
