Background

With the launch of Chat GPT (OpenAI, 2022) in November 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from curiosity to serious business applications. Forbes Advisor has surveyed 600 business owners who are using or planning to incorporate AI in business (Haan, 2023). The result showed that AI was adopted or planned to be used in wide areas such as cybersecurity, fraud management, content creation, and customer relation management.

McKinsey (2023) did a comprehensive analysis of the economic potential of AI. In particular, Generative AI will have a significant impact across all industries. Furthermore, AI is likely to change the anatomy of work. This implies that workforce transformation is going to happen on a large scale and rapidly.

With the rapid adoption of AI, there was an increasing anxiety among workers that their jobs will be replaced. For example, 56% of 2,000 UK workers polled worry that their roles could be made redundant by AI (Winter, 2023). A quarter of US workers fear that their jobs will be made obsolete by AI (Rosenbaum, 2023).

Sugan is a student currently studying in SUSS and taking a Statistics course in this semester. He wants to utilize his statistical knowledge to find out if Singapore workers have similar anxiety in AI to those in the West. He developed a Likert's scale of five attitudinal statements to formulate a construct that measures AI anxiety. Each statement is a score of 1 to 10 and the total score represents the AI anxiety of the participant. A higher score means higher anxiety that AI will replace the participant's job.

Through literature review, Sugan discovered that there was no specific comparison of AI anxiety between male and female workers. In a multilinear regression analysis study done by Kaya et al. (2022), there is an indirect conclusion that females are slightly more anxious than males in AI transformation. Unfortunately, this was an indirect deduction from the research. As such, Sugan decided to doing specific analysis to determine if this is so for workers in Singapore.

Sugan invited his classmates in SUSS to participate in the survey, which was made available online. The data from the survey was recorded in the Excel file provided.

Question 1 (a) Describe the 90% confidence intervals for the mean AI anxiety score of female and male students, respectively. Interpret the meaning of the 90% confidence interval. Discuss whether Sugan can conclude that the average AI anxiety score of female workers is higher than that of male workers in Singapore.

(b) Apply an appropriate hypothesis test to determine if the mean AI anxiety score of female workers is higher than that of male workers in Singapore. You are required to justify the choice of your test by verifying the assumptions.

(c) Sugan is invited to publish his research in the SUSS community magazine, which is for workers in Singapore. Summarise the above analysis into a simplified article for the magazine. You may also use the results you have developed in your TMA. not more than four hundred words.
