Background
You have been called in to consult on the design of a "Green" house. This is to be located in Susquehanna County PA. The house is to consist of a single 1500ft2 open living area (9 foot ceilings), and is to be heated by a wood burning stove. The insulation will be very well designed, and therefore the only major heat losses in winter will be from ventilation (incoming air from the outside at a cooler temperature replacing exhaust air at the indoor temperature).
Part 1(estimated time -2 classes)
We want to keep the average indoor air habitable in winter, under reasonable worst case conditions. Under such circumstances, how much wood will need to be burned to keep the house in the range 70-75F(note the wood consumption will be a function of the desired indoor temperature). Assume a reasonable range of ventilation (air exchange) rates. Set this up as a table (e.g. a Python array or data frame), which you will use in the next part.
Part 2(estimated time -2 classes)
Combustion of the wood will result in emission of pollutants into the room - we are particularly concerned with carbon monoxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's). Under the various potential design conditions in (a), estimate the resulting CO and PAH concentrations in the indoor air.
Part 3(estimated time -1 class)
From consultation of the health literature (including the below links), what CO and PAH concentration would you regard as acceptable. Based on this, what ventilation (and wood consumption) rates would you propose - if none of the ventilation rates are "reasonable", then what alternatives might you suggest for acceptable indoor air quality?
