Balance Sheets Discussion 1 1 unread reply. 1 1 reply. A corporation distributes its annual report to the public. This document has the management spin as well as the financial data. The corporation is also required to submit an annual financial report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which is called a 10-K report. This is the fundamental document for all financial analysis. We will now go through one of these documents, step-by-step to help get you more familiar with the information available. There is no shortcut or summary you can read. You MUST go through the entire document to understand a corporations financial position. If you take the time to go through this first report the rest of the course will seem much easier. If you merely attempt to skim over this introductory document you will find this course much more difficult. Lets begin: Click the link in Step One (which will open a new browser window) and then follow the steps on screen by clicking back and forth between the two windows. Go to the SEC Website (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Go to the tab labeled: Filings. Click Company Filings Search. In the Company name box enter Maytag Corp and search. In the Filing Type box enter 10-K and search. Select the 10-K for 2005 filing date. Select Document 1- file: d10k.htm. If this method does not work for you, click the link below to go directly to the Maytag 10-K forms. However, since its important that you know how to use the SEC site, try to get to it using the above steps. Maytag 10-K (2004) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. If you merely click the instructors answer without trying to find the answer yourself this will NOT be a learning experience for you. Good luck. Corporations' financial positions change significantly over time. Financial analysis allows you to evaluate their current financial positions and to forecast changes. You have now gone through the Maytag 10-K and we will let you start discussing their financial reports. Refer to the Maytag 10-K you just reviewed to answer the following discussion questions. Try to be persuasive in your conclusions about their financial position and the class should attempt to reach a consensus on each topic based on evidence from the financial document. Maytag Corporation went from being one of the only Fortune 500 corporations with no debt and a triple A credit rating to one of the few corporations with a negative net worth that is not currently in bankruptcy. Examine the corporations web site, annual report and 10-K. Pay particular attention to the companys balance sheet. Discuss Maytags balance sheet, why it took on so much debt, how this debt impacts its financial status and what the corporate managers could do to deal with this situation. Cite your sources in parenthesis for others. Questions to consider: Why so much debt? How does this debt impact its financial status? What could corporate managers do?
