ALLIANT: Alliant Energy's utilities, Interstate Power and Light (IPL), and Wisconsin Power and Light (WPL) provided electricity to more than 970,000 customers and natural gas to about 412,000 customers in four states. CINERGY: Its traditional operating units generated, transmitted, and distributed electricity to more than 1.5 million customers and natural gas to 500,000 in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. Cinergy had agreed to be acquired by utility behemoth, Duke Energy, in a $9 billion stock swap. NSTAR: Utility holding company transmitted and distributed electricity to 1.4 million homes and businesses in Massachusetts; also served some 300,000 natural-gas customers. The company marketed wholesale electricity, operated liquefied natural-gas processing and storage facilities, provided district heating and cooling services, and offered fiber-optic telecommunications services. SCANA: The holding company served more than 585,000 electricity customers and 690,000 gas customers in South and North Carolina and the neighboring states through utilities South Carolina Electric \& Gas and Public Service Company of North Carolina. WISCONSIN ENERGY: The company's utilities provided electricity to nearly 1.1 million customers and natural gas to 1 million customers in eastern and northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula
