"Don't expect us to do Scrum"
You've been asked to become the Scrum Master for an existing engineering team. As part of the
ambition to use Scrum throughout the company, this team is expected to do so as well.
On your first day, while introducing yourself, you're approached by Bob, one of the senior engineers.
"You have to understand ..." he starts "... that we have our own way of getting things done in this
team.". He continues "This Scrum-stuff will come and go. It's just another change initiative that
happens every now and then. We'll play along, but don't expect us to change anything. Our approach
is just fine! It was 15 years ago, and it still is today!". He clearly has strong feelings about this.
When you talk to the other members of your team, you get similar responses. This is not how you
imagined your first day. On your way home, you're wondering how to approach this situation.
How does resistance manifest in this case? How else can you consider this? What is something you
would do next? What is something you would definitely not do?
