About Brotherhood Books (BBooks) Brotherhood books is an online 2ndhand bookstore. It is a 100% subsidiary of the Brotherhood of St Laurence Social Enterprises.

  • BBooks raises funds towards an Australia Free of Poverty.
  • It saves many thousands of discarded books from Landfill each year.
  • It is staffed by Volunteers and has one paid person, the book shop manager
  • Books are donated at BSL shops and sent to BBooks warehouse
  • The books are processed by the staff at the warehouse
  • When the books are sold they are shipped to the purchaser via courier.

Process overview for your reference

Receiving process:

  • Books are received into loading dock and taken off truck via forklift
  • Books are removed from bin ready for triage
  • They are then categorised as Fair, Good, Great and Pulp.
  • Books are uploaded onto the website and allocated a SKU number,
  • An SKU sticker is produced and attached to the spine of each book
  • Books are shelved in SKU order.(StockKeepingUnit, a unique number used to internally track a business' inventory)
  • Books are ordered by this SKU number.

Sale process:

Picking

  • An order is allocated a unique sequentially order number by the system and then printed
  • The Book Manager allocates a courier for each order and writes it on the order form,
  • Courier type is determined by which area the order will be sent to.
  • Pickers pick an order by using the SKU,
  • When orders are printed, the product is printed in the order the customer selected them in.
  • When the order is being fulfilled each line item must be picked sequentially
  • A completed order is then placed in the staging shelf according to the Courier type

Packing

  • From the staging shelf the order is moved to a packing station
  • Packers clean the books
  • Cleaning process (Sanding & some other stuff)
  • remove the SKU sticker
  • Packers pack the order in Mailer bags.
  • Bags cannot exceed 5 Kg for the Couriers.
  • Mailers sent via Amalgamated Couriers are labelled with the Customer Pre Printed address label
  • placed in the despatch area for that courier.
  • Orders to be sent via Star track are packaged in "Mailers".
  • They are put on a trolley to be labelled by the Star track system.
  • The trolley is taken to the office ready for customer labels
  • The admin person creates printed labels and attaches it to the Mailer
  • Mailers are then placed in the despatch area for that courier.

Despatch

  • Couriers (Amalgamated & Star Track) pick up from dispatch at 3pm every weekday
