• A study tested the observed and expected effect of viral infections on skin rash development in mice. Researchers examined mice for presence or absence of a rash among groups of mice that were either infected with the rubella virus, Zika virus, or given a placebo (a control).

• A study tested the effect of soil moisture on the survival of plants. Researchers exposed individual plants to 0 to 100 ml of water per day for 20 days, and then recorded whether the plant was dead or alive at the end of the experiment.

• A study tested the effect of different therapies and different diets on a particular type of cancer using mice. Researchers measured the size of tumors in mice that were either provided radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or no therapy (the control), in combination with high protein, low protein, or no protein diets.

• A study tested the effect of caffeine consumption and amount of sleep on stress hormone secretions. Researchers measured stress hormone concentrations (g per L of blood) in humans that were given 0 to 100 mg of caffeine and either slept for adequate or inadequate number of hours per night.
