- Benita should find out more information about the Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance to the best of her abilities. She may better know this program by the name of Social Security. It was created due to the Great Depression in the 1920s to help provide economic relief for those who could not work anymore. Before the Depression, known as the "Roaring Twenties," people bought items through credit lines and barely saved enough money. So the government issued a need for employers to collect taxes out of their worker's paychecks in order to provide provisions for Trust Funds. Although this Fund is collected as a whole, each state can allocate money to its residents (Segal, 2016). I believe that instead of the rich paying fewer taxes, which is 4.2%, compared to the national average of 7.65%, they should pay more to help fund the program and receive benefits themselves. This could help boost the amount of funds being given to each person. There is no known law that states that they can't receive it. If the government did this, then they could lower the percentage for everyone, but still above the 4.2%, and allow minimum wage workers to take home more of their hard-earned pay to provide for their families.(JL)
