Benzodiazepines (BZD) are a class of drug that are used to treat a variety of conditions including anxiety. A case-control study was conducted in Sweden to determine whether being prescribed benzodiazepines is associated with greater risk of suicide in psychiatric patients.

The cases were chosen by first identifying all individuals who died by suicide in Orebro County, Sweden between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2013. The study included only individuals who had received psychiatric care within two years prior to suicide. In total, 154 cases were identified. Each case was paired with one control matched for sex, main diagnosis, and psychiatric main diagnosis.

Medical records were used to determine whether each case had been prescribed benzodiazepines within 2 years prior to the date of suicide. For controls, medical records were used to determine whether benzodiazepines were prescribed within 2 years prior to the date that the matched case died by suicide.
