Biofuel (BF) can be produced by reacting superheated sawdust (SD) with a chemical powder
catalyst (C) and water (W) in a reactor and separating out the products. The reaction proceeds
as follows: SD +2W --> BF An inlet stream containing fresh sawdust, water, and the catalyst are
mixed with a recycle stream before entering the reactor. The flow rate of the fresh feed is 224
molhr with mole fractions of 0.252 for sawdust, 0.708 for water, and the balance catalyst. The
stream leaving the reactor contains only biofuel, catalyst, and unreacted water. The effluent
stream is fed to a condenser, where the components are separated completely into two streams.
The bottom stream is the product stream that contains essentially all of the biofuel fed to the
condenser. The top stream, containing all of the catalyst and water, is split into recycle and purge
streams. The single pass conversion of water is 63.3%.
