Black tailed gulls normally lay one to three eggs- and occasionally have a fourth egg clutch. One theory is that clutch sizes are limited by how effectively parents can incubate their eggs. Suppose that on average, 18% of gulls lay one egg, 40% of gulls lay two eggs, 38% of gulls lay three eggs, and the remainder lay four eggs.
