Practicum Project Focus

You will need to choose a focus for this project.

Your focus area must be connected to topics you have learned about in the MA Program AND you need to have access to scholarly literature from the program to support your project work.

Some students pick an umbrella focus (i.e. parent engagement) and then also flesh out related sub-topics they want to pay attention to.

You will have about 5 weeks in your practicum setting to explore your project focus (design, implement and reflect).

Below are some ideas of 'umbrella focus areas' that you might choose. All could be broken down into smaller, discrete focus areas. This is NOT an exhaustive list:

  • family/parent/community involvement
  • assessment practices (could be formative/teacher created and/or summative [teacher or outside created])
  • classroom environment
  • Use of the technology with students
  • gathering and using information about students (L1s, L1/L2 abilities, interests, etc) - like a CLD biography
  • a SIOP component - lesson planning, building background, interaction, comprehensible input, review, and assessment,
  • oral language development
  • written language development
  • reading development ( content area, comprehension, phonemic awareness)
  • connecting content to students interests
  • supporting ELLs in mainstream content area classrooms
  • Vocabulary development
  • Literacy Development (reading, writing, speaking, listening)
  • ?????
