Blood samples were collected from 150 stray dogs in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dogs were then necropsied and the pulmonary artery, heart, and vena cava were examined for the presence and number of Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm). Concurrently, a serologic test was performed on these animals' serum according to the manufacturer's recommendations. All tests and necropsy results were performed "blind". The following data were obtained: of the 60 dogs with heartworm, 48 tested positive. Of the 90 dogs without evidence of heartworm, 3 were positive.
In Maryland, heartworm is currently a relatively rare infection. Estimates of true prevalence (based on necropsy findings) are typically between 0 and 1% of randomly selected dogs.
II.1) Construct a hypothetical 2 X 2 table for a sample of 1,000 Maryland dogs, assuming the sensitivity and specificity values from the Louisiana study, and a true prevalence of 1%. Round your calculated cell values to the nearest integer. (Fill out every cell containing an asterisk)
Sensitivity from the Louisiana Study is : 48/60= .8
Specificity from the Louisiana Study is: 87/90= .966
