Labor - increased demands from customers caused labor strains within the workforce Wide range of aircraft type increases assembly complexity, specifically the 787 program - overall delays in order delivery Threats Volatility of oil can affect fuel prices thus a letdown in future purchase orders Competitors such as Airbus and Bombardier earning place in market Military spending impacting defense product division Order delays resulting in cancelled contracts being awarded to competition BOEING'S SWOT AND STRATEGIC GOAL 2 Strategic goals In order to overcome some of the threat and challenges faced by Boeing (BA), a strategic goal that can help the organization accomplish is the restructuring of its defense and space division into Boeing Defense, Space & Security, known as BDS (Boeing, 2016). The concept of this goal is to join multiple programs under a single umbrella in effort to reduce the risk for singular divisions, remove excess costs, share knowledge and increase efficiency which should help address the delay issue (Schmidt, 2015). As BDS makes up approximately 40% of Boeing's model, consolidation can prove to make an immediate and noticeable impact (Hellman, 2013). The necessity of the strategic goal for Boeing is based on its position in the market and to reinforce its value to the industry when it comes to competitor presence and sustainability in volatile times. Reallocation of resources by combining divisions to create BDS will have a cascading effect throughout the company based on cost reductions and more profits by avoiding delays which can be reinvested into the company for R&D purposes and to satisfy potential customers desire to surpass delivery expectations.
