Bonaire Salt (BS) is the only export of Bonaire, a small Dutch island, producing salt through solar evaporation. The facility consists of 16 rectangular pans, where half are dedicated to creating brine, which is then transferred to the other eight pans for 43 weeks of evaporation. The harvested salt is then stored in large conical piles, transported to a pier via conveyor, and loaded onto a ship for transportation. One bulldozer takes 10 weeks to harvest a pan, with Bonaire Salt currently having two bulldozers. Each harvest yields 40,000 tons of salt, with the conveyor system able to load 20,000 tons per week. The storage area can hold 15 cones, each capable of holding 9,600 tons of salt. BS currently sells for $25 per ton on the market. A representative from a large international conglomerate is visiting Bonaire to calculate the current and potential output of BS before making a bid to buy the facility. Given current operations, how much salt can Bonaire Salt produce per week on average (in tons)? Bart suggests that it could increase output if it purchases another bulldozer. If it did, what would be its average weekly output of salt (in tons)? Bas has another idea for increasing output. He suggests that it could divide each of the eight producing pans it has in half, to make 16 producing pans. Bas assumes that this could be done without losing much productive area, meaning that two of the smaller pans can yield as much salt as the combined larger (current) pan. Even under that optimistic assumption, Bart doesn't think it would increase average weekly output because it wouldn't change the amount of area actually producing salt. Who is correct? A third idea for increasing output was also discussed: Add more producing pans. Based on a map of the land around the facility, Bas believes it probably could add three more producing pans of the same size as the eight current ones (and there would be enough capacity in the brine-producing pans to support these three additional producing pans).
