Article Selection Assignment- CLO 1, CLO 3

Over the next several weeks, you will choose a topic, refine it into a research question, and use this question as a springboard for a sustained process of research and inquiry in a simulated proposal. In this course, you will be developing a simulated proposal in steps. This is not your final dissertation proposal, but a chance to practice developing the steps needed to write a proposal. The decision you make on this activity and the ones to follow in this syllabus are not a commitment of your dissertation focus. You do not have to select a dissertation topic at this time. However, if you do have an idea of what you would like to focus on as a dissertation study topic, then it would be wise to use this course to get ahead.

Your simulated proposal will adapt and become more complex as you continue to read, question, learn, and revise. While many students have likely performed research on a topic, and might even have been made to write longer research papers before, it is also likely that far fewer students have been asked to generate and support an original argument based on that research. This is the time to practice this skill. Because we often do not know what we want to research until we begin to read and writte, we will begin this simulated proposal by exploring the literature.

To begin, scan through and read scholarly articles which include a focus of interest to you in the field of business, pertaining to your DBA concentration. Select five (5) articles that are closely related in topic and answer the following in a two to three page response:

Why did you decide to focus on this topic?

Which three articles did you select?

How do these articles relate to each other? How do they differ?

Do you intend on using these articles to support your upcoming dissertation research topic?

What kinds of additional questions do you have about this topic that are not answered by the articles you selected?

NOTE: If you do not have a clear idea yet of what area you would like to focus on, consider your personal and professional aspirations. Think about your personal and professional interests and about the factors which motivated you to start a doctoral program at this point of your career. What would you like to do with your degree? The answers to these questions may help you narrow down topics and areas of interest.
