BPMN can document the details of how a process operates. BPMN is a visual representation of a process that shows:

  1. Who and what is involved in the process and their interactions; and
  2. The flow of a business process from activity to activity to the desired results.

For this assignment I want you to use the information from your readings in Chapter 12 on how to build a process model. The BPMN videos can be found throughout your chapter reading. More videos are also found under Readings in this weeks Blackboard module to help you get started. I know you can find samples to solve this task on the Internet but I encourage you to do your own work. Thinking through the process by yourself will be very advantageous for you to understand how BPMN works.

Scenario

Your assignment is focused on the simple concept of ordering, making and providing Coffee or Tea in a typical coffee shop. The menu is limited and the only drinks that can be ordered are:

Coffee

Cappuccino

Caf Latte

Espresso

Tea

English Breakfast

Earl Grey

To streamline this scenario lets assume a few things. The order, preparation and delivery process of the hot beverage are similar to those in any large coffee chain. This includes:

  1. Capture the order Orders and cash are taken by the Cashier from the Customer;
  • Orders taken by the Cashier are passed to a Barista via a software tool and are shown on a screen for fulfillment by a Barista.
  1. Fulfill the order
  • There are separate processes for preparing tea and coffee;
  • Completed orders are provided to the Customer by the Barista.
  1. For either of the above options you may need to think about restocking or retrieving more supplies as you build your process (ex. sugar).
  • The Customer is able to select their own coffee fixings such as sugar/creams at a separate serving bar.
  • Consider what happens if something runs out, include a process to fulfill an empty cream container, etc.

To Do

Build a process diagram from order to delivery to the customer for each of the menu items. Think of all the details that go into fulfilling the order. Much like a recipe, if you forget to do a step, the process may fail. It may be easier to sketch out a process first. You can use the examples in the book (page 453). Here are some sample templates to help you get started:

Include objects for start, end, activities, and gateways which are also explained on this page. Dont forget the arrow directions! Here are some other things to remember as you build your process:

  1. There are two different process diagrams - one is to PLACE AN ORDER the other is PREPARE THE ORDER.
  2. There are different types of teas and coffees that can be ordered by a person.
    1. Tea: Earl Grey and English Breakfast
    2. Coffee: Espresso, Cafe Latte, Cappuccino
  3. In process #1 PLACE AN ORDER, breakdown the steps to capture an order.
  4. In process #2 PREPARE THE ORDER, breakdown the steps to make the hot beverages (what goes on behind the counter). Each teas and coffee should have their own flow (you may need to look up how to make the coffee types - hint: steamed milk).
  5. Hot beverages can be personalized (think about your order at Starbucks!) by the customer.
