FSM4160 Foodservice & Beverage Strategies & Logistics Assignment #1 SWOT Analysis: Brinker International/Chili's 15 points The purpose for these two assignments (#1 SWOT, and #2 Five Forces) is to allow you to apply and interpret strategic planning tools from class using an industry example. This is in fulfiiment of course objectives 3, 4, 5, and 6. Your first step is a quick review of the definition of strategy and operational effectiveness: Strategy is an integrative set of choices that positions you on a playing field of your choice in o way that you wm[\"', # Strategic positioning attempts to achieve sustainable competitive advantage by preserving and strengthening what is distinctive about a companymj. = Operational effectiveness involves gaining competitive advantage via the myriod activities that go into creating, producing, selling, and [ii] delivering a product or service\" . We use SWOT analysis to flesh out the areas where an organization is proficient (strengths), and deficient (weaknesses) while assessing the external environment (opportunities, threats). The purpose is to use SWOT results to inform action that improves operational effectiveness and strategic positioning. Assignment #1 focuses on Chili's Restaurants using recent publicly available data from the company, and research from reliable industry sources. The publicly available reports include \"real life\" data which allow for creation of a proper SWOT analysis. Using these data, each student will practice applying and analyzing SWOT as a strategic planning tool in alignment with the strategic management process outlined in class and in your textbook. Before you begin, be sure to read the textbook summary of the strategic management process (what | call the \"four components of strategy\") and the textbook section on SWOT analysis. This assignment allows you to apply three of the four components of strategy including: \"understanding strategy and performance,\" \"environmental and internal scanning,\" and \"strategy formulation.\" There are three parts to this assignment.
