You are a senior manager for your organisation, an organisation called The Righteous Bean. Part of your responsibilities involves ensuring all business units are working smoothly together and harmoniously to achieve both the short- and long-term strategic goals. You take part in regular meetings with other senior management and board members to discuss performance and work priorities. As part of a recent initiative, you have been tasked with developing a business plan/proposal centred around a new idea or activity that aims to fast track progress in achieving the current strategic priorities/goals.

In this task, you are required to undertake a project in which you will develop a business plan for a specified business idea or activity.

The business idea or activity could be something you have worked on in other classes, or be a new activity, department or similar within an existing business. Alternatively, your idea or activity can be based on the case study organisation The Righteous Bean.

Note, if using the case study organisation, your assessor will provide you with the relevant information you need, including The Righteous Bean Strategic and Operational Plan.

Your idea or activity must be:

  • able to be implemented, monitored, and reviewed by the end of this study unit (only one aspect of the plan needs to be implemented, monitored, and reviewed - this will be done later tasks)

  • viable in regard to the cost, timelines, and other resources for that one aspect being implemented.

The business plan will outline the feasibility of the idea along with all strategies needed to successfully lead the implementation of the business operation.

Your business plan must be professionally presented using different information presentation methods and breakdowns of information to communicate with stakeholders effectively.

To complete your plan, you can use and/or adapt the Business Plan template provided or alternatively source your own. However, you must address all of the criteria in the business plan template provided.

You will need to work with the business or a peer playing the role of someone connected to the business in order to answer questions, generate information and ideas, and gain the insight needed to inform your decision-making processes. Evidence of consultation will be recorded as part of the Appendices section of your business plan.

The rest of the business plan needs to be researched and decisions made through analysis of quality information sources.

You will implement your plan in Project 2 and evaluate the outcomes (post-implementation) in Project 3.

4. Business Direction

Discuss the business direction - both broadly and in context with the new idea.

Analyse and research the following business information attaching any relevant evidence (e.g. communications, summary of research, results from analysis):

  • Business vision
  • Mission
  • Values
  • Objectives
  • Goals

Use any existing plans, available information, and results from consultation to inform your decision:

Develop suitable business performance objectives and measures. Include appropriate key result indicators, in each of the following areas (at a minimum):

Collate the objectives, measures and indicators into a table that indicates the breakdown of business goals to:

Undertake a competitive analysis then use this area of the report to discuss your findings.

Include evidence of identifying and analysing competitors in the market including those who:

  • have had similar ideas
  • are producing similar products or providing similar services
  • are competitors because of the industry only
  • have similar quality products and services but at different price points
  • are known for different qualities such as customer service, service provision, product quality or similar
  • service similar segments of the market, customer profiles or similar.

Remember to investigate and discuss:

  • their products and services
  • their marketing, promotions and sales
  • other aspects of their work which would require competition.

Draw conclusions about what each competitor is doing well and what they are missing in regard to market need.

Identify performance requirements for products related to your own ideas, and for the aligned products and services.

7. Marketing Plan

Document a detailed marketing strategy.

Include evidence of using the market, competitive analysis, and the client profile to determine the following:

  • Marketing objectives, performance measures and standards.
  • Possible marketing opportunities including channels or options like websites, social media or similar.
  • Branding strategy including development of any new logos, taglines or key messages.
  • Any specific campaigns, their timing and the resources required.

8. Operational Plan

Document an operational plan that includes sections for production and purchasing.

10. Financial Plan

Document a financial plan. This could be in a budget format, using a table and detailed comments or it could be using a combination of text and tables to break down the plans.

Remember to include the following:

  • An analysis of the financial resources required to achieve each goal, objective, activity and task and in the production of all products/services.
  • The links between finance and the other areas of their business plan including the marketing plan.
  • The expected or target income and expenditure figures (financial indicators).

Remember to:

  • justify each resource in regard to other areas of the plan
  • explain the strategies for financial management to be adopted by the business
  • demonstrate in-depth analysis on the likely income streams to justify the viability of the business / business activity.

11. Implementation Plan(incl. monitoring and performance)

Document an implementation plan that includes the requirements for monitoring and performance.

Your plan should logically and sequentially identify each of the following:

  • All established goals broken down into objectives then activities, tasks, other plans and key decisions from the business plan criteria.
  • The communication activities related to informing stakeholders of the requirements and timelines.
  • Any additional activities related to creating tools, templates, instructions, policies, procedures and other tasks required to action each other section of the plan.

Recommend that the plan be implemented according to the plans you have developed.

Explained the preferred course of action to be taken and why that course of action should be taken.

13. Reference List

Include all sources of information, including verbal and other people resources, in your reference list.

You may need to have an ordinary reference list of sources with source titles, authors and dates accessed in addition to a summary of conversations, copies of notes as appendices and similar.

Remember, your references and your included information will form a large part of your evidence of researching, interpreting and analysing.

14. Appendices

Use this section to include all your evidence of:

Read the Project 2 Scenario and then complete the following tasks.

For this Stage, you are required to refer to your business plan and labour plan to monitor and test the performance measurement systems you have set up.

To do this you will need to gather data and compare current outcomes against the performance objectives you established in each of the key result areas of your business plan. Refer to the performance indicators to determine if actual outcomes are in line with your expectations. If you notice any errors or anomalies, you will need to correct these, as required.

Prepare at least two (2) short form reports, each related to a specific key result area detailing the following:

  • Established personal / business performance objectives/indicators.
  • Data collected (qualitative and/or quantitative).
  • Analysis, including a determination as to whether the plan is on track, or if not, what refinements need to be made.
  • Outcomes, including key results from testing and corrective action you have undertaken to address measurement system errors or anomalies.

For at least one (1) of your reports, you must include financial data - provide a visual of budget (planned) vs actual in the analysis section of our report.

In this task, you are required to continue to implement and embed your business plan within your business context and track progress against the plans as you do. You will use this information to:

  • undertake different types of monitoring activities
  • improve the performance of the human resources and stakeholders involved in the activity
  • identify ways to improving, and undertaking the improvement of the plans, schedules, communications, and other aspects of the business plan
  • analyse your own performance in business planning and implementation to identify ways to improve performance in the future.

You will need to collect, analyse, and interpret a range of information and make reasonable assumptions, where necessary, to complete these stages. Where assumptions are necessary, you should indicate this in your findings.

Stage 1 - Performance analysis

Learner Instructions

For this Stage, you are required to source and/or generate and analyse a range of performance reports related to the various key results areas (KRAs) of the business plan (section 4). Note, these could be progress or management reports prepared by you or other key stakeholders during the implementation phase. Reports may also include data extracts, financial statements, reports from software or systems used to implement the plan, or written summaries provided by staff.

Use the reports to perform an in-depth analysis of the outcomes (to date) and how they compare against the planned objectives.

In your analysis, present your findings visually (e.g. graphs, tables) where appropriate so that you are able to draw clear conclusions from the data.

You will need to provide comment on each of the KRAs established in the plan, which covers the following information.

  • Established business performance objectives.
  • Analysis, including:
    • a summary or snapshot of the data
    • a determination as to whether the performance indicators have been met, or if not,
    • what refinements or adjustments need to be made.
  • Outcomes, including:
    • reasons for variation or underperformance (or over performance if applicable)
    • how these have been addressed, i.e. the actions you have taken to refine or modify the performance indicators, milestones etc.
    • any other key conclusions or learnings
    • ongoing review processes you have established.

Stage 2 - Training needs

Learner Instructions

For this Stage, you are required to use your analysis results in Stage 1 (as well as any other applicable information recorded in the Issues Register and Labour Plan - Project 2) to show how you identified and responded to underperforming staff members.

You will need to show the following:

  • What the performance issue was.
  • How the issue was identified.
  • The coaching strategies you used to upskill the staff member/s, including agreed actions to be taken, the nature of the coaching activities, and follow-up activities to ensure the coaching was and continues to remain effective.

Evidence could include a combination of the following:

  • Records of performance against established labour plan.
  • Information recorded in issues register.
  • Email correspondence with staff to support activity/task completion, e.g. advice and/or assistance on specific topics/response to questions asked.
  • Organising training or mentorship with others.
  • Support resources, e.g. guidelines or links to resolutions.
  • Providing encouragement or motivation as noted in meeting minutes, email, or other correspondence.
  • Directing towards other forms of support, such as team member, external agencies etc.
  • Video evidence of training/coaching session.

Stage 3 - Business plan review

Learner Instructions

Refer to all of the data and records you have collected during the implementation of the business plan (i.e. Project 2 and Project 3: Stages 1 & 2).

Perform any additional research as required to provide an overall analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the business plan in the form of a report.

You will need to look in detail at what has worked well and what potential improvements can be made. Be sure to refer to any refinements or modifications already made, as well as any key milestones reached.

Discuss the lessons learned, including the things you would do differently, particularly in regard to:

  • the approach to the research and development of the business plan
  • the presentation and communication of information
  • the identification and breakdown of goals and objectives
  • the identification and implementation of various strategies
  • the specification and pricing of products and services
  • the recruitment, engagement, and training of labour.
