Student 1:

"Recognize that a decision needs to be made.

  • Where should I move after graduating from CSUMB?
  • Generate multiple alternatives (brainstorming? Involving others?)
    • Stay in Monterey, rent out and pay rent for my own apartment
    • Return to San Diego, move back in with my parents rent free
  • Analyze the alternatives (Conduct research, engage in evidence-based decision making)
    • Stay in Monterey
      • According to Zillow, the average price of rent for an apartment in Monterey is $2,475
        • https://www.zillow.com/rental-manager/market-trends/monterey-ca/
        • (Links to an external site.)
        • More than I will be able to afford coming out of college
      • With the economy growing each day, the average price could be up more in a year from now.
      • Will my friends that I have made impact my liking of the location because they will no longer be living here?
        • Yes, it will greatly impact my fondness of the area.
          • Will I be able to make more friends in the area outside of school?
      • Will there be any job openings for my desired profession?
        • Tech careers are highly applicable in the Bay Area.
      • Will I work remotely?
        • A lot of tech jobs are able to be worked remotely/ through Zoom.
    • Return to San Diego
      • Moving back to San Diego will mean no money going towards rent
        • I Will be able to afford this
        • Able to pay off student loans faster
        • I enjoy hanging out with my parents
        • Will save money on food/ won't have to cook for myself as often
      • Return to hometown friends and family
        • Not feel left out of gatherings and parties anymore
      • Same route that my brother who graduated went with
      • According to NBC, the average price of a studio apartment is $2,417
        • https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/san-diegans-struggle-with-rising-rent-prices/2946865/
        • (Links to an external site.)
          • Moving back in with parents will allow me to save up to possibly buy a house instead of renting
  • Select the best option/alternative
    • I believe that moving back to San Diego will be the best option for me socially and financially. I have enjoyed growing up in San Diego for my childhood into adulthood, and feel that it suits me better than staying Central California.
  • Implement the selected alternative
    • I will be implementing in May of 2023
  • Evaluate its effectiveness (did it turn out the way you expected?)
    • Although I have not been able to implement my decision, I know that this will be the best choice for me for a variety of reasons. To start, as a freshly graduated college student, and the impending competitive job market facing me, I will have to apply and interview for jobs, not knowing when I will get hired. This means I will not have an income, so I will not be able to pay rent. I plan to travel after graduation which adds to the finance section of this decision. San Diego is a major city, and hub for new and established companies, with my friends and family in San Diego I have a better chance of having a connection into a company. With all factors laid out this seems to be the best decision for me.
  • Looking at the results of the decision, what barriers or biases did you face?
    • The biases that I will be facing is the negative stigma that comes along with moving back in with your parents having graduating, as this is supposed to mark an occasion of never moving back in. Now it is more common than ever given the state of the economy and the increase in rent prices everywhere."

Student 2:

"When I was about to graduate high school, I wanted to move away from the Monterey Bay area. I felt like since I'm local, I wanted to go off and experience new cities and be independent. At the time I was a senior in high school, I had applied to 4 colleges and got accepted into all of them, but me being an only child with overprotective parents, they did not think I was ready to go off and be independent, so they kind of forced me to stay, since my mom works on campus, she thought it'd be a good idea for me to go to CSUMB.

Although it wasn't my first choice to go to CSUMB, respectfully, in the end, I'm glad I ended up staying local because I met so many friends that I see as a family now. Plus, due to Covid, if I moved away, I would've had to come back home anyway, so I guess it's a good thing I stayed at CSUMB. I believe everything happens for a reason. After everything was reopened again, I was excited to go back to campus in person and socialize."
