Business Relationship Management is a process where a third party assists with enhancing and facilitating communication between two parties in a business environment. Oftentimes this is done in the form of a business relationship manager thoroughly eliciting requirements as well as gaining an understanding of customer needs and expectations to be communicated to a service provider. In turn, the business relationship manager will also communicate important information from a service provider to stakeholders, such as steps a service provider is taking to fulfill commitments as well as proactively providing updates on deliverables in order to prevent stakeholders from receiving any "surprises" during a project life cycle.
While generally focused on facilitating communication with clients and customers, the role of business relationship manager can also be effective for facilitating organizational change. One way a business relationship manager can help with change management activities is through facilitation of dialogue between organizational stakeholders and executive leadership or project sponsors for change management projects. This can ease the change management process by helping to build trust and a desire for collaboration among stakeholders, as the ability to successfully implement organizational changes is heavily impacted by the level of resistance that is exhibited by stakeholders, and the willingness of those stakeholders to genuinely engage in organizational change efforts.
Another more technical way that a business relationship manager can facilitate the change management process is by working with various organizational stakeholders to gain a more thorough understanding of deficient organizational processes and procedures. When executive leadership is determining what changes to make, if organizational stakeholders do not feel consulted or that they can take an active part in creating organizational change, there will be more resistance and less willingness to change. A business relationship manager can make efforts to make stakeholders feel like they are an active part in determining what changes need to be implemented.
