Businesses and their communities are mutually dependent. Business relies on the community for services and infrastructure, and the community relies on business for support of various civic activities. For example, businesses depend on the community for education, public safety services such as police and fire protection, recreational facilities, and transportation systems. In some instances firms receive financial support from the community to locate a facility there. The community depends on business for support of the arts, schools, healthcare, and the disadvantaged, and other civic needs through taxes and donations of money, goods, and time. Another advantage that comes with businesses in a community are the obs that they will create and economic development. Companies create community relations departments to work closely with other departments that link the company to the outside world such as public relations or PR, and internal departments such as human resources. All these roles form important bridges between the company and the community. Community relations departments are involved with a range of diverse issues including education which is said to be the most important issue. Other issues that the department focuses on are science, technology. engineering, and math literacy. Other critical issues are poverty and hunger, disaster relief, and environmental sustainability.
