BUSN11, you read about the options for organizing a business (i.e., sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations). This assignment is two-fold: (1) What are the legal procedures for registering a sole proprietorship in the city or county in which you live? (2) What are the legal procedures for organizing a corporation in an assigned state? For part (1) of this assignment, contact your City Hall, Mayor's Office, Courthouse, or County Executive's Office to determine the procedures for registering a business as a sole proprietorship. What type of information about the business and owners must be provided? What fees (including the amounts) must be paid to register a sole proprietorship? Include any other necessary requirements for forming a sole proprietorship in your city or county. You should find that it's relatively easy and relatively inexpensive to organize a sole proprietorship. For part (2) of this assignment, go online to the website for the state which you will be assigned. You can conduct a search for the state website through Google.com. However, most state websites can be accessed by entering the following URL: www.state.xx.us with the two-letter state abbreviation inserted for the xx. For instance, the website for Georgia can be accessed with www.state.ga.us. The website for New York can be accessed with www.state.ny.us. From the state's website, look for links about "business," "business organization," "starting a business," or similar wording. Determine the forms that must be filed, basic information that must be provided, and fees (including amounts) for incorporating a business. You should find that it's somewhat more difficult to organize a corporation than to organize a sole proprietorship. Prepare a written report in Microsoft Word about the procedures for registering a sole proprietorship in your city or county (including any documents to be completed and filed and fees, including amounts, to be paid) and the procedures for incorporating a business in your assigned state (including any documents to be completed and filed and fees, including amounts, to be paid).
Cite your sources on a separate page at the end of your report. Your sources for your city/county will probably be interviews with individuals in city/county government and/or brochures/publications provided by the city/county government. You may have Internet sources as well. For the state information, you'll probably be using Internet sources; but you may have printed documents or interviews as well.
For interview sources, give the name and position of the individual interviewed andplace, date, and time of the interview. For printed literature, provide standard publication information. For Internet sources, give the full URL accessed and the date accessed.
The Microsoft Word document should be named in the following format: City or County Name_State Name_Your Name. For instance, if student John Doe lives in Smyrna and has been assigned the state of Alaska, his Word document would be saved as Smyrna_Alaska_John Doe.
The paper should be prepared in the following format:
- Use an appropriate title on the first page.
- Type your name below the title.
- Use 1" side, top, and bottom margins.
- Double space and indent the paragraphs.
- Use a standard 10- to 12-point font.
