QUESTION 1 The organisation, which employ you, manufacture a large range of electrical goods. Two items, a washing machine and a tumble drier, in recent times became problematic. The Management Accounting Department found the two products became unprofitable and they recommended discontinuation of the two products. The Operations Director is of the opinion the two products can become profitable once more. The Operations Director requested you to investigate the problem. During your investigation, you found both the products follow the same assembly process where they require a similar amount of wiring and drilling. Each washing machine requires 3 hours of wiring and 2 hours of drilling. Each tumble drier requires 2 hours of wiring and I hour of drilling. During the next production period, 240 hours of wiring time are available, and 140 hours of drilling time are available. A management decision prescribes that in order to fulfil a previous order of washing machines, that at least 20 washing machines must be produced but no more than 80 tumble driers can be produced. Management made a second decision you must investigate requiring that at least 30 washing machines must be produced and no more than 50 tumble driers must be produced each production period. Each washing machine sold yields a profit of R25, 00 . Each tumble drier assembled may be sold for R15, 00 profit. You are required to solve the problem utilising the graphical linear programming method. Please note if you utilised any other method to solve the problem, no marks will be awarded. a. Formulate the problem by identifying the variables, objective function and constraints for the problem at hand. b. Solve the problem through the application of the graphical linear programming method and construct the graph
