California attorney and sole practitioner Sam has been having substance abuse problems with alcohol. Recently Sam has hit a low point in his life, and, on some days, has not been coming into his office. His paralegal, Suzie, has been trying to cover for him as best she can. Their general law firm checking account balance is very low, and the rent and utilities are due in two days. They did, however, just receive a big settlement check for a client, on an old personal injury case. Suzie is weighing her options and does not want the landlord or power company to take action against Sam or the firm. She would also like to be paid this month.
