Calorimetry Lab

Purpose: In this lab, the study of calorimetry will be examined.

Website: https://media.pearsoncmg.com/bc/bc_0media_chem/chem_sim/calorimetry/Calor.php

Procedure: On the left of the simulation is the directions to follow. The trick on this lab is to push the next button after each step of it won't move on to the next step.

  1. Pick out a solid metal to use for this experiment. You may choose any solid. Assign a mass of your choice and pick a temperature higher than 75 deg. The lab will give you a specific heat of the metal, but you will be finding it and comparing it to the actual value (the one given in the lab)
  2. For the calorimeter, use water as your solvent. Choose your mass. Record the temperature (it should be set at 20 deg)
  3. Hit the start button and watch the graph. Record the highest temperature of the calorimeter.

Data:

Metal (___________________) Water
Mass
Temperature start
Temperature end

Calculations: Use the concept that heat gains = heat lost and solve for the specific heat of your metal. Find the percent error of the specific heat. Show work here including the equation.

Conclusion: Answer in complete sentences.

Explain what was gaining and losing in your experiment.

How would the results change if you used a different amount of metal? Explain.

How would the results be changed if you lost heat in the transfer? Would your results be high or low? Explain.

What would happen to the results if your metal didn't reach the temperature that was on the hot plate? Would your results be high or low? Explain.
