*Can anyone respond to this post? Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not*Intuit reported this week an undisclosed amount of accounts had been breached. Tax returns from the prior year, current returns, names, SSNs, addresses, DoBs, DL# and financial infomations had been compromised. According to Intuit, the breach was not within Intuit networks, but login credentials were stolen by a non-Inuit sources and used to login to turbotax accounts.
The growth in information systems to make life convenient for society, includes tax software. When originally offered, turbotax or H&R block, software installed on local client machines. E-filing then submitted your completed tax return. Both services now offer a browser based version, that require user accounts and can be accessed with simple login credentials. This presents new vulnerabilities to users. Mitigation includes using multifactor authentication, validating IP addresses and providing resolution services for victims of cybercriminals. Broadly as society uses more networked based conveniences, exposures to new cyber vulnerabilites present themselves.
