One of the most meaningful recognitions I have received was during my previous stint as a Sales Manager for a five-star luxury resort in the Philippines. We were bidding for an incentive group organized by a telecommunications company for a 3-night stay for around 300 persons which would give the resort a potential business of around $600,000+, however they were also considering other destinations in addition to the Philippines such as Thailand and Indonesia. My supervisor asked me to handle the inquiry as she knew that it was a bit of a complicated group and needed someone who she knew had enough experience and patience to confirm the business. She sat me down and explained to me that she trusts me and my abilities to handle the inquiry. It made me feel pressured as if I lost the business, it would make me feel that I let her down but she made sure to let me know that she would be there along the way to help me when needed. The group had very specific requirements and a detailed itinerary per day. The inquiry came in around July and the trip was for January of the following year. I worked on the proposal and presented to the company's management team and they eventually decided to go with the Philippines as a destination for this particular group. However, they were looking at other resorts within the Philippines. I then had to make a second round on presentation and revise the proposal several times until they decided to bring the group to our resort. I then moved on to working on the contract, which took longer than expected as the company had very specific requirements regarding the clauses to be included on the contract. After several months of back and forth, the company finally signed the contract in November. This was a big deal for the team and the entire resort as it meant that occupancy levels for the following year was off to a great start and we would likely exceed our revenue target for the first quarter. My supervisor and teammates congratulated me and we all went out for dinner to celebrate. Sometime in December, a few days before the holidays, we had a resort-wide town hall meeting. The meeting was intended to discuss any updates for the upcoming year, focusing on the first quarter. The General Manager then announced regarding the upcoming group and thanked me, in front of everyone, for managing to close the deal despite several bumps along the way. I was taken aback and surprised as I expected him to discuss any preparations that needed to be done prior to the group's arrival, but I did not expect him to mention anything about who closed the deal. This made the recognition even more meaningful as usually, recognitions are only done within the team by your supervisor, but very rarely by the General Manager and in front of all employees. He thanked me for my hard work and that left the crowd cheering and congratulating me after. According to Kouzes and Posner (2017), to recognize contributions, we must expect the best and personalize any recognition we give. I think that the above experience I shared touches both of these points. My supervisor believed in my abilities hence assigning the account to me. She believed I could confirm the group, which made me believe in myself, too. She was there when I needed help and always made me very comfortable to ask questions when there was something I was unsure about. She congratulated me and highlighted my achievement to my teammates. Meanwhile, the General Manager recognized me in front of all other employees, which was also a very personalized recognition. Getting the support of the management team as well as all my other colleagues made me believe in myself and my capabilities even more. It motivated me to continue to exceed performance expectations as I felt that I was valued and that I was an important member of the company as I could create an impact for my colleagues, the resort, and its profitability.

The recognition that stands out to me was when I was the president of the International Students Association during my undergraduate studies. During my tenure, I led the association in organizing over 30 events, including a career fair, a housing fair, and two banquet galas for more than 2000 attendees. I also represented international students in monthly meetings with the Cabinet of Student Leaders to discuss campus policies and significant events. Additionally, my team and I developed and launched a mobile app to provide online services. Internally, I expanded the managerial board from 25 to 100 members, doubled the number of social media subscribers, and increased the annual revenue by 40% to $90K. All of these efforts culminated in the recognition of the Outstanding Association of the Year from my university. This recognition was particularly meaningful to me because it represented the collective efforts of my team and myself. More importantly, it validated the time and effort that we put into the association voluntarily. The recognition was not just a pat on the back or a trophy to display. It was a testament to the value of our work and the positive impact we had on the community. It gave us a sense of pride and accomplishment, motivating us to continue making a difference. Additionally, it helped to build our credibility and reputation, which allowed us to attract more sponsors, partners, and members. This recognition taught me the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of individuals and teams. It fosters a culture of appreciation, gratitude, and motivation. It also helps to making a positive work environment, which leads to increased productivity, creativity, and innovation. In summary, the recognition I received was not just a moment of glory, but a powerful tool for personal and organizational growth.
