Over the past few decades, Australia's relationship with the Asia-Pacific region has changed a lot. As a country, Australia has strong historical, economic, and cultural ties to the area, which have helped it grow and become more successful. But this relationship hasn't always been fair, especially for Australia's First Peoples, who have been left out, treated unfairly, and lost their land. In this position statement, I argue that Australia's relationship with the Asia-Pacific region needs to be re-evaluated and changed so that the views, voices, and goals of Australia's First Peoples can be taken into account. First, it's important to understand Australia's relationship with the Asia-Pacific region in its historical context. Australia's history of colonization and the subsequent removal and killing of its Indigenous people have left a legacy of inequality, discrimination, and being left out of society. Australia's involvement in the Asia-Pacific region has been mostly driven by economic and strategic goals, without giving enough thought to how it affects its First Peoples. For example, Australia's economic partnership with China has helped its economy grow a lot, but it has been criticized for putting economic interests ahead of human rights issues, such as how China treats Uyghur Muslims. So, any talk about Australia's relationship with the Asia-Pacific region must include the effects of colonization and the need to decolonize. Second, Australia's relationship with the Asia-Pacific region needs to be looked at again in light of the rights of Indigenous peoples to self-determination and sovereignty. Australia's First Peoples have a unique connection to the land, culture, and spirituality, but colonization and continued marginalization have messed up this connection. When Australia works in the Asia-Pacific region, its First Peoples' rights and interests must be respected, protected, and advanced. For example, Australia's involvement in the Pacific region must be guided by the principles of partnership and mutual respect, which recognize the freedom and independence of Pacific Island countries and their Indigenous communities.
