EXTENSION ACTIVITIES A Behavior at the Focal Length You might have noticed that measurements became more difficult when the object distance approached the focal length. Use your measurement of the focal length to explore this behavior. 1. What happens to the image distance when d ~ f? Explore this by projecting the image onto a wall from 2-4 meters away. For the purposes of this exercise, an image distance of a few meters can be considered to approach infinity. 2. Now explore what happens to the image distance when d; ~ f. Place the object very far from the lens and see where it produces an image. The image will be very small, so look for a well-defined dot of light. This must be done in a very dark room where the object is the only source of light (including reflections of the object). Move the lens back and forth to find the image distance at which this dot is as small and crisp as possible. Again, consider an object distance of a few meters to be effectively infinity. a. The focus of a lens or mirror is defined as the point at which light rays from infinity (or an approximation of infinity) converge. So, this second measurement with the light at "infinity" produces a direct measurement of the focal length. The focal length is simply equal to the image distance with an object at "infinity". Does this measurement agree with your careful measurement from the lab?3. Based on these observations, explain what happens to the Thin Lens Equation when d ~ c and d. ~ co? Describe the relationships between images or objects at infinity and the focal length by completing these general statements: a. An object placed at the focus of a lens makes an image at... b. An object placed at a very large distance from the lens produces an image at
