Introduction

Often, a manager must make decisions that require data that is not readily available or data that is not in a form suitable to statistical analysis. In this unit, we will consider what you, as a manager, must do in such a situation. We will also discuss the ethical issues involved in data gathering, and how a manager goes about collecting data to address data-sparse situations. There are techniques and tools for gathering data where none has been collected before. These techniques have been categorized as qualitative and are found under a decision analysis topic term of the same name.

Understanding the various types of qualitative tools and techniques available to a manager is critical for successful managerial decision making. When you approach this different decision analysis topic with an open mind, you will be ready to apply each qualitative technique to your managerial success toolbox.

Objectives

To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

  1. Develop a research question hierarchy to clarify the purpose of qualitative research for decision support.
  2. Assess ethical considerations in the collection and analysis of qualitative data to support business decision making.
  3. Analyze different types of qualitative data collection and analysis methods.
  4. Describe how different types of quantitative data collection and analysis support business strategies and decision making.
  5. Summarize the use of qualitative data to support business decision making.

Complete the following:

  • Read Cooper and Schindler's 2008 article, "Starbucks, Bank One, and Visa launch Starbucks Duetto Visa," pages 1-6, in preparation for this unit's assignment.
  • Read Garcia and Gluesing's 2013 article, "Qualitative Research Methods in International Organizational Change Research," from Journal of Organizational Change Management, volume 26, issue 2, pages 423-444.
  • Read Spicker's 2011 article, "Ethical Covert Research," from Sociology, volume 45, issue 1, pages 118-133.
  • Read the excerpt from Chapter 6, "Analysis Data," from Wilkinson's 2000 book, Researcher's Toolkit: The Complete Guide to Practitioner Research, pages 77-81.
  • Read Chapter 8, "Qualitative Research Methods," from Willis, Mukta, and Nilakanta's 2008 book, Research Methods for Educational Technology, pages 199-256.

Data Gathering and Analysis

For this assignment, you will examine the use of qualitative data for a business scenario.

Review Cooper and Schindler's 2008 article, "Starbucks, Bank One, and Visa Launch Starbucks Card Duetto Visa," located in Resources, and address the following components in your assignment:

  • Answer discussion questions 2 and 4 at the end of the case.
  • Describe any ethical issues that should concern Starbucks about this initiative.
  • Summarize the use of qualitative data to support business decision making. Consider different types of qualitative data collection and analysis methods and the ways in which they can support business decision making and strategies.
