Can you comment to these two posts of my classmates its discussion questions and i need to comment in two of them?

  1. To me, what makes someone beautiful changes in stages. My first initial perception of beauty comes from appearance at a glance. At this moment, all I have time to evaluate is a first impression and a feeling. As time moves on, my perception of beauty changes to what is inside of a person, such as their beliefs, mannerisms, and interactions with others, as opposed to their outward appearance. For example, if someone has a bad personality, then that decreases my view of their overall beauty. From the readings, I think I've grown to realize how much the media impacts others' (and myself) view of their own appearances and compares themselves to what society deems beautiful. As a result, I think I've realized the importance of trusting my other instincts and senses as opposed to just vision to determine my opinions of beauty.I would not participate in a similar activity as Esther Honig or Priscilla Yuki Wilson. In Honig's series, it seemed like the artists changed her skin tone or added a lot of makeup. In Wilson's series, it seemed like her skin tone stayed relatively the same, and perhaps added some neutral makeup. I am not one to care too much about beauty standards and would rather present myself in how I think makes me look confident and comfortable, and I would prefer not to let others influence my opinion of myself. As I was watching the Dove experiment, I was trying to think about my appearance. I found it difficult to put my appearance into words, and started off thinking very critically of myself, just like those who were describing themselves in the video. I liked this experiment because it reminded me to be gentle to myself and realize that I am more beautiful than I let myself to believe. When a human sees another person they like, different pleasure centers of their brain are activated and engage with another part of the brain that processes faces. Basically, whenever we see something beautiful, our brains become more active and recognize the beauty, despite whatever else you might be thinking about at the time.I watched Cameron Russell's "Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model," and Richard Seymour's "How beauty feels." I resonated more with "How beauty feels." Beauty comes in many forms, and it is not just about the appearance of something. Beauty can be about appearance and visual likes, but beauty is also about feelings and emotions and how you begin to react to said object. What Seymour described about how we perceive objects within the first "50 microseconds" really stuck with me. I don't think it is enough time to draw a full conclusion as to whether or not we visually liked what we saw, but it is enough time to get some sort of feeling. I also believe that feelings and beauty change with time as we receive more information.

2. 1.) In my opinion, someone is beautiful when they represent themselves in ways they are most comfortable with. Being beautiful is not the same as being skinny, with perfect hair, eyes, and clear skin. Beauty has been perceived and brought about in many different ways through societal opinions regarding weight, skin tone, and physical appearance. My opinion of beauty has not changed after these readings, although they have opened my eyes to the truth about society and the idea of beauty. As many of the readings have said, society and social media have affected appearance concerns. The article "I Have Worth," explains the different portrayals of beauty today and how it has been reconstructed through dolls, brand advertisements, and art. The fashion industry has brought about many changes that thousands of people consider "ugly." In my opinion, anybody can bring out their inner beauty by wearing and expressing themselves confidently. Confidence is beauty.

2.) If I was asked to participate in a similar activity, I would want to send my photograph to 20+ countries to make me fit their standard of beauty. From visiting a few different countries, I have noticed that beauty standards are quite different. In the United States, social media has created a straightforward beauty standard that is highlighted through commercials, magazines, and films. I would like to see how I would look as "beautiful" in different countries. In my opinion, I do not think it was difficult to describe my appearance through words. When describing myself and how I dress, it seemed like I was describing thousands of other people as well. With that being said, I also know that a lot of people do not express themselves the way I do, and I like to be confident in my own physical appearance. I like trying new styles, whether it has to do with my hair, makeup, clothing, or accessories. It is important to be unique and find creativity in one's own self-expression.

3.) According to Anjan Chatterjee's TED Talk, the human brain decides by using a specific part in the back of the brain that determines whether or not one is attractive or beautiful. There are specific parts of the brain that activate when processing the physical appearance of objects. Without knowledge, one can choose a face they prefer just by sensing a part of their brain that finds interest in one look over another; without realizing the true idea of beauty. Studies suggest that our brain automatically responds to beauty from pleasure; causing a stereotype of beauty in the brain. Anjan Chatterjee emphasizes the importance of the brain associating beauty with "good." Many observational studies have shown that people see others with small unpopular facial differences as "less good." It is very surprising that the brain can cause its own stereotypes of beauty due to preference.
