Can you give a short response (follow up) to the 2 discussion posts listed below.

Here are the questions each post below is about: Topic A: Would you kill the fat person?

Looking back at the original trolley problem, throwing one switch to divert a train so it would only kill one person rather than five, discuss whether you think you would throw the switch. Then consider the twist where you could push a rather large person (gender should make no difference) from a bridge to save the lives of five others. What is the difference, if any, between the two scenarios? What do you think your answer says about your moral compass?

Topic B: Mask up?

During any pandemic featuring a virus that is spread through the respiratory system, people are encouraged to wear masks as doing so helps not only the wearer but the people around that person if he or she happens to be infected unaware. Using the fundamentals of utilitarianism, argue either that people who refuse to wear the masks (for other than medical reasons) should be fined or jailed OR that personal rights to freedom are more important for the greater good.

Topic A

For this week's discussion, I chose to go with Topic A. I feel as if this is an age-old question I have heard plenty of times before. The question is it morally right to sacrifice the life of one for the many. In this scenario given to us, there is a slight twist. It asks us if we would push a rather large person from a bridge to save a life. The original question is would you flip a train switch to kill one verse the many. I think the biggest difference is the mechanical switch and you putting hands on the person. I feel as that could play a huge difference on the mental status of a person. Personally, I think in both situations I would be able to do it. In my occupation, there are times where you have to make life and death calls that involve the lives of other people. When it comes to the greater good of the many 10/10 I would try to save as many lives as possible. This decision is solely based on the fact that I don't know any of these people and their life story. I feel as if that could construe many people's decisions. As far as what this says for my moral compass is that I align with Utilitarianism in the fact that I'd do the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people.

Topic B

For this week's discussion I have chosen topic B: Mask up. This topic is relevant to us all considering we have all been living through this pandemic and many of us have different beliefs and views on the pandemic as a whole and if we should wear a mask or not. On this topic the question is should people be fined or jailed for not wearing a mask? According to this week's classroom reading utilitarianism is described as, "Utilitarianism is a consequentialist morality. What matters are the outcomes or the consequences of inaction? That doesn't mean the motivation is irrelevant because the motivation should be to accomplish the greatest good for the greatest number." In other words this is saying that if utilitarianism is used then there should indeed be a consequence for the action of not utilizing a mask. When it comes to our country and the freedom that we are supposed to have I believe it is a choice. As a citizen of the United States we are supposed to have the right to do as we please as long as we are not breaking the laws that are already set out for us and wearing a mask is not written out for us yet. Yes, it may be unsafe for yourself but if you accept the consequences of that action, you should have the freedom to not have to wear one and the same goes for the people who do decide to wear one. They have the ability to protect themselves. How we choose to live our lives is to each their own and each person being able to have their own freedom in the end would be for their own greater good.
