It is meant to support managers in the decision-making process and give them statistics to make an informed decision that will be best for the organization. The decision matrix in particular is a technique that police administrators find especially helpful. They write the different alternatives horizontally and the different criteria horizontally. They give each criterion a numerical weight, from most important to least important. They then rate how well the alternatives meet each criterion. The alternative scores are then multiplied by the criterion weights to produce a numerical value for each alternative/criterion relationship. The best alternative will be the one with the highest sum, but it still comes down to the preference of the leadership. Decisions should be made with the support of data, rather than based only on the gut instincts of administrators (More et al., 2020). Police administrations have decisions to make that often have large repercussions, such as how to divide resources, what training programs to use, or what equipment is best for officers. People often have conflicting beliefs on what is best, and having data-based conclusions can be helpful support to an argument (Philips & Sobol, 2012).
