Does Modality Matter? The Effects of Reading, Listening, and Dual Modality on Comprehension:
Our study aims to explore the effects of various input modalities (e-text, digital audiobook, or dual modality) on verbal comprehension and retention in college graduates who speak English as their first language (Rogowsky et al., 2016).

We aim to reproduce and generalize previous study findings in order to provide additional insights into this field. Our study is a replication of earlier research on the impact of various input modalities on comprehension, including work by Plass, Moreno, and Brunken. We repeat the experiment in which participants are given the identical training materials in different modalities, and comprehension is assessed both immediately (Time 1) and after a delay (Time 2).

Although earlier research has yielded insightful information, our study solves a number of obstacles. <-- CITE SOURCE (?) We include a dual modality condition that enables participants to read and listen to the content at the same time, in contrast to some earlier research that only looked at reading or listening modalities. Furthermore, by focusing on college graduates between the ages of 25 and 40, our study directly tackles the lack of consistency in earlier research evaluating the impact of modality on comprehension for adult populations. Our work closes a significant gap in the literature by examining the impact of modality on comprehension and retention in a controlled experimental setting. Especially in the context of adult learning, we advance knowledge of how people absorb and remember information delivered in a variety of media. Furthermore, by adding gender analysis, we fill a gap in the literature and may be able to identify any gender disparities in comprehension across modalities. In summary, our research aims to shed light on the impact that modality plays in verbal understanding and retention. This knowledge will help educators, legislators, and technology developers make informed decisions about how best to communicate information to adult learners.
