Part 2 - repeated measure ANOVA

Watch the video 'repeated measure ANOVA using JASP' for how to run repeated measure ANOVA analysis.

A research study was conducted to examine the impact of the protein level of breakfast on adolescents' performance during a physical education physical fitness test. All of the subjects received a high protein breakfast, a medium protein breakfast, and then a low protein breakfast. After each breakfast, the subjects were given a fitness test with high scores representing better performance. Test scores are recorded below.

  1. What is(are) the independent variable(s)? __ _______Protein breakfast________________
  2. What is the dependent variable?__________Performancescores_________________________________
  3. Enter the data in Excel (Hint: you should have three columns), save it in csv format, and then open it in JASP. Run the repeated-measure ANOVA on JASP, paste ONLY the'Within Subjects Effects' table and report the result using APA format.

a. Paste ONLY the'Within Subjects Effects' table here:

b. Report the ANOVA result in APA

A two-way ANOVA was conducted that examined the effect of grade level and protein level on performance of a fitness test. There was not a significant interaction between the effects of grade level and protein level on performance of a fitness test, F(1,16)= 2.222, p=0.155.

There was a main effect of Protein such that participants in the low protein group (M = 4.00, SD = 1.70) scored significantly lower in the physical fitness test than the high protein group (M = 6.00, SD = 2.58), F(1,16) = 8.89, p=.009.

There was a main effect of group grade such that, on the physical fitness test, juniors (M= 6.50, SD=2.07) scored significantly higher than seniors (M= 3.50, SD= 1.58), F (1,16) = 20.00, P<.05, p=.000

  1. (This is an extra credit question worth 1 point in addition to 15 points).

Do you need to run post-hoc analysis? ______ (yes/no)

If yes, pleasepaste the Post Hoc Comparisons table (Hint: in JASP, select Holm under correction) andbriefly state what it shows using words. If no, pleasestate why.

No, we do not need to run a post-hoc analysis, because we should run it only if we are testing more than 2 groups. Also, post hoc tests are run to confirm where the differences occurred between groups, they should only be done when you have a shown an overall statistically significant difference in group mean. Since we have only two groups, we know the difference between the two and can compare easily, we do not need to run a post-hoc analysis.
