Can you save any binary data to a TFRecord file, or only serialized protocol buffers?

Question $5$ options:

you can store some simple binary data but don't use protocol buffers

you cannot store binary data in a TFRecord file

you can store absolutely any binary data you want in each record

you cannot store binary data, you have to convert it to more complex data
