CASE 2: THE SAFETY SHOES Albert Lee was appointed as the Safety Officer for Maxmark Industries Sdn. Bhd. two weeks ago. Albert has a degree in mechanical engineering and a certificate in industrial safety from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and was passionate about safety. He knew that some local companies did not take safety seriously but when he was interviewed for this job at Maxmark, he was assured by the human resource manager that the company was serious about safety and the target was zero accident. This morning, Albert decided to walk through the factory and observed the operations. He put on his safety shoes and walked to the mixing section of the factory. Albert saw eight employees operating different machines and noticed that one employee, Monzur Rahman, was wearing sneakers instead of safety shoes. There was a large "Safety First" sign on the wall at the entrance of the factory and throughout the factory there were safety posters, including one that read, "Wear personal protection equipment at all times". Albert immediately approached the employee and asked him to step out of the factory area. Albert then looked for Kumar Singh, the mixing supervisor on duty, and told him that Monzur Rahman should be suspended immediately and charged not wearing safety shoes in the factory, a serious misconduct. Albert will ask the human resource manager to arrange for a domestic inquiry. Kumar Singh was shocked and told Albert, "What are you trying to do? This section of the factory is not really dangerous and actually there is no need for safety shoes although the safety shoes rule covers the whole factory. Look, I am already short of staff and I cannot afford to have someone suspended for one or two weeks or I will not be able to achieve my production target. If mixing department does not meet the target, the whole factory will not have enough materials and this would mean the whole factory will not be able to achieve the production target, meaning that our customers are going to be angry with us and may start buying from our competitors. Why don't you just give him a verbal warning and I will ask him to put on safety shoes now?" 1. Do you agree with Albert's decision to suspend Monzur Rahman for not wearing safety shoes? Explain
