Case B Ensuring Patient Presenting is Actual Patient

The goal of the proposed intervention is to ensure that the patient presenting for care at the facility is the one covered by the insurance they are presenting. A capstone student suspects that some of the patients receiving care at the local public clinic are using a friend or relative$$s insurance to access care. The patient$$s name is connected to the medical and procedural history; therefore, treating the wrong patient has both clinical $($medications$,$ tests, diagnoses$)$ and financial implications for the provider, insurer, and patient whose insurance is being misused. Despite some insurance cards having pictures, the student noticed that the reception staff rarely look at them. Many insurance cards only have a birth date which is difficult to verify by sight only. The intervention would involve producing a picture ID in addition to the insurance card and using an electronic fingerprint verification system for each visit.
